Governor Orders Tax Freeze & Reassements for Marion County

July 18, 2007

It has been reported by several sources that the Governor Mitch Daniels has ordered a reassessment of Marion County and frozen the tax bills at 2006 amounts.

According to the Marion County Treasurer's office, tax bills are still due on July 27. Marion County will not send revised bills for the first installment so each taxpayer is responsible for determining how much was paid for the first installment in 2006. A corrected bill will be sent for the second installment. This bill likely will only be a provisional bill because the contractor hired by the state to complete the 2006 assessment of commercial (includes apartments) and industrial property will not have completed the reassessment by the November 10 due date. The plan is for the County to issue a press release by noon on Thursday. All new information will be available on the Indygov website (www.indygov.org).

Though this order is a small victory, much damage has already been done to Indianapolis community and real estate market.

There is no guarantee that the reassessment will be conducted in a fair manner. Residents and businesses remain at high risk for over-taxation to the point that the local economy will collapse.

Residents, business owners and even commuters from Indianapolis suburbs such as Carmel will be significantly negatively impacted by this crisis. We must continue to push hard on the state and city/county governments.
